Fitness job descriptions for Australian employers
The fitness industry runs on split shifts, peak-time demand and qualification-based rostering across gyms, studios and health clubs. From gym instructors to personal trainers and group fitness leaders, clear role definitions help employers hire well, roster fairly and stay compliant and safe.
Most fitness employees are covered by the Fitness Industry Award 2020 (MA000094), which sets minimum pay rates, weekend and public-holiday penalties, an unusual casual weekend structure, and allowances across a Level 1–7 ladder. Many roles require specific certifications — Certificate III or IV in Fitness, first aid and CPR, and format or aquatic accreditations.
These templates provide compliant, industry-standard job descriptions you can customise for your business. Each includes duties, required skills, certifications and award-classification guidance — then pair them with fitness rostering software and the Fitness Award pay guide once your team is hired.

Award coverage for fitness workers
Most fitness employees are covered by the Fitness Industry Award 2020 (MA000094), the primary award for gyms, studios and health clubs. It sets minimum rates across a single Level 1–7 ladder (including 3A and 4A) — from a Level 1 reception or gym-floor employee to Level 4/4A advanced instructors and personal trainers, and Levels 5–7 for supervisors and management — plus weekend and public-holiday penalties, overtime, and allowances such as the broken shift, first aid and leading-hand allowances.
Not every fitness-related role sits under MA000094. Sporting and recreation clubs may fall under the Registered & Licensed Clubs Award, and council-run leisure and aquatic centres may fall under the Local Government Award. Many larger operators also run on enterprise agreements.
A notable quirk of this award is the casual weekend treatment: instead of the full-time/part-time penalties, casuals are paid a single flat rate (about 130% of base) for ordinary hours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Use award interpretation software to apply this correctly, and read the full Fitness Award pay guide.
