Award coverage for health care workers
Most health care support roles are covered by one of two modern awards. The Aged Care Award 2010 (MA000018) applies to employees working in residential aged care facilities, retirement villages and aged care services — aged care workers, personal care assistants, shift coordinators and healthcare assistants in aged care settings. The Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Award 2010 (MA000100) applies to disability support workers, community support workers, home care workers, residential support workers and social/community service employees, covering NDIS providers, disability services, home care and community services.
Always verify which award applies to your specific service type and employee duties. Both awards include penalty rates for Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, evening shifts, night shifts and sleepovers, so use award interpretation software to calculate pay correctly. Most roles also require mandatory checks — a National Police Check across the sector, an NDIS Worker Screening Check for NDIS workers, and a Working with Children Check where supporting children with disability — alongside First Aid, CPR and vaccination records.

Health care job descriptions FAQ
-
A health care or aged care job description sets out the duties, required qualifications, mandatory checks and working conditions for a care role such as an aged care worker, disability support worker or personal care assistant. A good one also notes the classification level, the applicable modern award (the Aged Care Award 2010 or SCHADS Award 2010) and any screening requirements like a Police Check or NDIS Worker Screening Check. Our 15 free templates give you a compliant, Australia-specific starting point for each common health care role.
-
Most health care support roles are covered by either the Aged Care Award 2010 (MA000018) for aged care workers, or the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHADS) Award 2010 (MA000100) for disability support, community services and home care workers. Check which award applies to your specific service type.
-
Most positions require at least a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Disability or Home and Community). Some roles require Certificate IV or specific training in medication administration, behavior support or manual handling. First Aid, CPR and police checks are typically mandatory.
-
If your organisation is NDIS registered, include this in the job description along with requirements like NDIS Worker Screening Check, understanding of NDIS practice standards and person-centered care approaches. This helps candidates understand compliance expectations.
-
This depends on your service model. Permanent staff provide continuity of care for clients, which is especially important in aged care and disability services. Casuals offer flexibility for variable client needs and filling shifts. Many providers use a mix. See our guide on casual vs permanent employment.
-
While there are common elements across care roles, each position has unique responsibilities and requirements. Aged care workers focus on elderly clients, disability support workers on NDIS participants, and community support workers on diverse client groups. Use role-specific templates and customize them for your service.
