Waste management rostering software for Australian operators
Collection runs start before dawn, licences expire on their own schedule, and the award opens ordinary hours at 4am. RosterElf brings rostering, GPS depot clock-ins, licence tracking and award-aware pay rules into one system.

Four operations, one roster
Kerbside, transfer stations, commercial pickups and licensed waste run on different clocks. They still share a payroll and an award.
Kerbside collection runs
Fixed weekly routes with relief drivers, zone swaps and a hard deadline every morning. A no-show is a missed street, not a quiet shift.
Transfer stations and MRFs
Weighbridge operators, plant operators and sorters across a span that opens before dawn and runs past the public counter closing.
Commercial and skip services
On-demand pickups where the roster changes with the booking sheet, and drivers move between depots mid-week.
Liquid and hazardous waste
Licensed drivers and specific vehicle classes, where rostering the wrong person is a compliance problem before it is a service problem.
Where waste payroll goes wrong
Each of these is a data problem, not a decision. Full detail in the Waste Management Award guide.
The 4am start is ordinary time
The award opens ordinary hours at 4.00am. Paying a penalty for every pre-dawn start is the most common overpayment in waste payroll — and treating a late finish as ordinary is the most common underpayment.
Licences expire on their own schedule
Driver classes and endorsements renew independently of employment. The first person to notice a lapse should not be the duty manager at 5am with a published roster.
Shift loadings turn on when a shift finishes
Afternoon and night loadings are defined by finish time, not start time. A crew that runs 40 minutes late can cross into a different rate without anyone deciding to.
Casual overtime is not the usual sum
Everywhere else the 25% casual loading is added to the penalty. On overtime this award adds 10 points instead — 160% and 210%, not 175% and 225%.
Clock on at the depot, not the office
Crews start at a depot or transfer station and finish wherever the run ends. Geofenced clock-ins record where and when a shift actually started, against what was rostered — which is the comparison an early-start or overtime question turns on months later.
- A geofence per depot, transfer station or yard
- Shared kiosk at the gate for crews without phones
- Actual versus rostered hours on every shift
- Records kept for the seven years Fair Work requires
Never roster an expired licence
Heavy vehicle classes, dangerous-goods endorsements, forklift tickets and first aid all renew on their own cycles. Store each against the employee with its expiry date and get warned while renewal is still routine — not on the morning the run has to go out.

Waste management rostering FAQ
- Yes. Build each route as a reusable roster template, then duplicate it per zone and adjust crew size for seasonal demand. Relief drivers can be matched by the licence class the run requires, so a swap does not put an unqualified driver in a heavy vehicle.
- With GPS geofencing around each depot or transfer station, or a shared kiosk time clock at the gate. Both record the actual start against the rostered start, which is the comparison an early-start dispute turns on.
- Yes. Staff can be assigned to more than one site, and you can see who is available across all of them when a run needs covering. Hours roll up per site for cost reporting and per employee for award purposes.
