Pharmacy job descriptions for Australian employers

Community and retail pharmacies run on a blend of professional practice and retail service, often across extended trading hours. From pharmacy assistants on the front-of-shop to pharmacists in the dispensary, clear role definitions help employers hire well, roster for compliant coverage and stay on the right side of registration and award requirements.

Most pharmacy employees are covered by the Pharmacy Industry Award 2020 (MA000012), which sets minimum pay across assistant Levels 1–4, student, intern and pharmacist streams, plus evening, weekend and public-holiday time-band penalties, junior rates and allowances. Pharmacists and interns must also hold current registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia via AHPRA.

These templates provide compliant, industry-standard job descriptions you can customise for your pharmacy. Each includes duties, required skills, registration or qualification guidance and award-classification notes — then pair them with pharmacy rostering software and the Pharmacy Award pay guide once your team is hired.

Award coverage for pharmacy workers

Most pharmacy employees are covered by the Pharmacy Industry Award 2020 (MA000012), the primary award for community and retail pharmacies. It sets minimum rates across pharmacy assistant Levels 1–4, pharmacy students and interns, and a pharmacist stream (pharmacist, experienced pharmacist, pharmacist in charge and pharmacist manager) — plus evening, weekend and public-holiday penalties by time band, junior rates for assistants under 21, overtime, and allowances such as laundry and meal allowances.

Not every pharmacy role sits under MA000012. Hospital and public-sector pharmacists are often covered by health-sector awards, allied-health staff by the Health Professionals & Support Services Award, and general shops by the General Retail Award. Many larger pharmacy groups also run on enterprise agreements.

Registration is central to compliance. Pharmacists need general AHPRA registration and interns need provisional registration; verify these before staff start and keep records. Use award interpretation software to calculate accurate pay including time-band penalties, and read the full Pharmacy Award pay guide.
