These templates are designed to reflect Australian workplace standards and office administration practices at the time of publication. They are a general guide only and do not constitute legal advice. Review and tailor each template to your business, modern award, enterprise agreement and specific requirements. The Clerks – Private Sector Award is the default for clerical work only where no industry award covers the business — if an industry award applies, its clerical classifications may apply instead. Award coverage for office & admin workers

Most office and administration employees are covered by the Clerks – Private Sector Award 2020 (MA000002), the default award for clerical and administrative work in the private sector. It sets minimum rates across five clerical levels (Level 1 has three pay-points) plus a call-centre stream, along with penalty rates, overtime, allowances and a 3-hour minimum engagement for part-time and casual staff.

The Clerks Award is only the default where no industry award applies. If your business is covered by an industry award — retail, hospitality, manufacturing and others — the clerical staff in that business are usually covered by that award’s own clerical classifications instead. Managers and professionals whose duties sit above the clerical classifications, and public-sector employees, are also outside the Clerks Award.

Getting the classification level right is the most common compliance pitfall — read Clerks Award classification levels explained, and use award interpretation software to calculate accurate pay including penalties and overtime.
