Most gas employees are covered by the Gas Industry Award 2020 (MA000061), the primary award for the transmission, distribution, wholesaling and retailing of gas. It sets minimum rates across a single Level 1–8 ladder — from a Level 1 entry-level employee to a Level 8 specialist technician or supervisor — plus afternoon/night shift loadings, weekend and public-holiday penalties, overtime, and allowances such as the availability-duty and first-aid allowances.
Not every gas-related role sits under MA000061. Gas manufacturing, liquefied petroleum (LP) gas transport and sale, and work covered by the Electrical Power Industry Award are all excluded. Many larger gas businesses also run on enterprise agreements that pay above the award.
Licensing and gas safety are central to compliance. Gas fitters need a gas-fitting licence; operators and technicians need role-specific tickets and site inductions.
