AI rostering with Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini

AI rostering with your own AI assistant

This article explains how to use an AI assistant with RosterElf. You install the free RosterElf skill in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. The assistant can then open RosterElf in your browser and do routine work for you.

Ask in plain English, for example “open my roster for next week” or “show timesheet costs for last fortnight”. The assistant works signed in as you, so it sees only what your login can see.

RosterElf stays in charge of pay

The assistant reads and navigates RosterElf for you. Award rates, penalties and allowances are still calculated by RosterElf when a roster is costed, never by the assistant.

1. What you need

  • A RosterElf login. The assistant uses RosterElf as you, not through an API.
  • An assistant plan with skills. As of October 2026: Claude on any plan with code execution switched on, or ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare or Edu.
  • Browser control. Claude’s Chrome extension, ChatGPT’s agent mode or Gemini Agent, so the assistant can open RosterElf.

Plans change

Which plans include skills is set by each AI company, not by RosterElf. If your assistant does not offer skills, check its own help centre for your plan.

2. Install the RosterElf skill

2.1 Install in Claude

2.1.1 Download the skill from the RosterElf skill for Claude page.

2.1.2 Upload the zip in Claude’s skills settings and leave it switched on.

2.1.3 Switch on Claude’s Chrome extension so Claude can open RosterElf in your browser.

2.2 Install in ChatGPT

2.2.1 Download the same skill from the RosterElf skill for ChatGPT page.

2.2.2 Upload it in ChatGPT’s skills settings.

2.2.3 Start a chat in agent mode so ChatGPT can browse.

ChatGPT browses from its own computer

ChatGPT’s agent mode opens RosterElf in a remote browser on OpenAI’s systems, not in yours. You log in to RosterElf inside that browser, and you may be asked again in later chats.

2.3 Build a Gem in Gemini

2.3.1 Follow the five steps on the RosterElf Gem for Gemini page. Gemini cannot install a skill file, so you paste the instructions into a new Gem and add the knowledge files.

2.3.2 Use the Gem with Gemini Agent so it can browse.

3. Ask the assistant for a task

3.1 Log in to RosterElf in the browser the assistant uses. Never type your RosterElf password into the chat.

3.2 Ask for one clear job at a time, naming the site and the week:

  • “Who is rostered at Bourke St Cafe on Friday?”
  • “Run the timesheet cost report for last fortnight.”
  • “Who changed Mia’s shift on Tuesday?”

3.3 Review what the assistant reports before you act on it. Check pay figures in RosterElf’s own reports.

4. What the assistant will not do on its own

The skill is read-only by default. The assistant will not do any of these unless you ask, in the moment:

  • publish a roster, create or delete a shift, or use DELETE ALL SHIFTS
  • process a payrun or change a pay template
  • approve, deny or book leave
  • download a staff file, which holds bank, tax and super details
  • cancel your account

One login can reach several RosterElf accounts that look the same on screen. The assistant checks which account is active before any change.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is AI rostering built into RosterElf?

Not as a screen in the app. It works through the free RosterElf skill, which you install into the AI assistant you already use. The assistant then drives RosterElf in a browser signed in as you. RosterElf stays the place where rosters are built, costed and published.

2. Which AI assistant plans can use the RosterElf skill?

As of October 2026, Claude supports skills on every plan, including Free, with code execution switched on. ChatGPT supports skills on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu plans, not on Free, Plus or Pro. Gemini cannot install a skill file, so you build a RosterElf Gem by hand instead. Plans change, so check your assistant’s own help centre.

3. Does the skill send my data to RosterElf?

No. The skill is a set of instructions for the assistant. It contains none of your data and sends nothing to RosterElf. The assistant reads only what your own RosterElf login can see.

4. Can the assistant change my roster or payroll?

It is read-only by default. It will not publish a roster, create or delete shifts, process a payrun, change a pay template, approve leave, download a staff file or cancel your account unless you ask it to, in the moment.

5. Can the assistant check that a roster is award compliant?

No. The assistant has no access to current Fair Work award rates. RosterElf applies award interpretation itself when it costs a roster, so check pay rates and penalties in RosterElf.

6. Should I give the assistant my RosterElf password?

No. Log in to RosterElf yourself in the browser the assistant uses. The skill never asks for your password, and you should never give it one. If the assistant says it cannot see your account, log in and ask again.

7. How do I update the skill?

In Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and ChatGPT, download the new version and upload it again. In Claude Code, run /plugin update rosterelf. A Gemini Gem has no automatic update, so whoever built it rebuilds it with the new files.
