Takes ~30 seconds No login required All states & territories

This calculator provides general estimates only. Long service leave is governed by separate state and territory laws (and some awards/agreements), and the rules on accrual, qualifying periods, pro-rata entitlements and when leave can be taken vary — pro-rata amounts are often only payable on termination. This is not legal or payroll advice. Always confirm entitlements with the relevant state or territory long service leave authority or Fair Work before paying or taking leave. It does not constitute legal, HR, or professional advice and should not be relied on as a substitute for advice specific to your business, workforce, or circumstances.

Long service leave rewards employees for a long period of continuous service with one employer. Unlike annual and personal leave (which are national under the National Employment Standards), LSL is set by each state and territory’s own law, so the rules differ depending on where the employee works. This calculator gives a quick estimate; for the detail, see our state guides for NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and SA, or our step-by-step guide on how to calculate long service leave.

Read this before relying on a figure

  • Accrual differs by state. Most states give about 8.67 weeks after 10 years (~0.867 weeks/year); South Australia and the Northern Territory give 13 weeks (~1.3 weeks/year). The calculator uses your state’s rate.
  • Qualifying periods differ too. You can usually take LSL at 10 years (7 years in VIC and the ACT). A pro-rata entitlement is generally payable on termination after about 5 years in NSW and 7 years in most other states.
  • Pro-rata is often payable only on termination, sometimes only if you leave for particular reasons. This tool estimates accrued weeks and their value — not a determination of what’s payable. Always confirm with your state’s LSL authority.

To reduce the guesswork in payroll, RosterElf keeps accurate service and pay records and helps you manage all leave types in one place — see leave management software and our free long service leave policy template.

Official state long service leave calculators

This tool gives a fast all-states estimate. For a binding calculation under your state’s law, use the official government calculator: NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, or the Fair Work Ombudsman’s long service leave page. Some industries (construction, cleaning, security) also have portable LSL schemes with their own calculators.

FAQ

Long service leave calculator FAQ

  • Long service leave accrues with continuous service. Most states give about 8.67 weeks (two months) after 10 years — roughly 0.867 weeks per year — while South Australia and the Northern Territory give 13 weeks after 10 years (about 1.3 weeks per year). The dollar value is the number of weeks multiplied by the employee’s ordinary weekly pay. Accrual, qualifying periods and the pay basis are set by each state and territory’s law, so confirm the details for your state.

  • In most states, around 8.67 weeks (about two months) of long service leave accrues after 10 years of continuous service. South Australia and the Northern Territory are more generous, giving 13 weeks after 10 years. Use the calculator above with your state and years of service for an estimate.

  • No. Long service leave is governed by separate state and territory laws, so the accrual rate, qualifying period, when you can take leave and the pay basis all vary. Most states accrue about 0.867 weeks per year (8.67 weeks per 10 years), but SA and NT accrue more (13 weeks per 10 years). NSW also allows a pro-rata entitlement after 5 years, while most other states are around 7. Always check your state’s rules.
