Award coverage

Understanding award coverage for childcare educators

Children's services award 2010

Childcare educators working in long day care centres, preschools, OSHC and other early childhood services are typically covered by the Children's Services Award 2010 (MA000120). This award sets minimum pay rates, penalty rates and conditions for early childhood education and care employees.

Under the award, Certificate III qualified educators are typically classified at Level 3.1 (newly qualified), Level 3.2 (after 1-2 years) or Level 3.3 (experienced educators). Diploma qualified educators are classified at higher levels depending on their role and responsibilities. Use award interpretation software to calculate pay accurately.

Penalty rates and shift work

Most childcare centres operate during regular business hours Monday to Friday, though some offer extended hours or weekend care. Penalty rates apply for work performed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays under the Children's Services Award 2010.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading in lieu of leave entitlements. Part-time and full-time employees accrue leave and receive penalty rates on top of their base rate for weekend and public holiday work. Ensure your payroll system correctly applies all applicable loadings and penalties.
